During summer vacation, I enrolled Ethan in calligraphy classes with our Japanese teacher. I figured he needed something to do during his two-month hiatus from school besides play games on his computer. So every Sunday, from 1:00-3:00, he'd go to class, carrying the calligraphy case our teacher bought for him.
When I would meet with our teacher for Japanese class, she'd tell me that Ethan had a real talent for calligraphy and that he had a good eye for seeing how to make a beautiful character (kanji character).
I figured once school started up again, Ethan would want to quit, but he told me that he really enjoys the classes and he wants to continue.
When Ethan was in elementary school in New Jersey, he used to take art classes on Sundays at a local studio. At that time, he loved drawing, and I saw a real talent in him. Over the years, that interest has waned, and he became uninterested in drawing, but I knew he still had that talent. It's so nice to see him using that artistic side again.
Two months since he started, he's now writing ancient Chinese poems on long scrolls. Something I certainly can't do!
Thank you, Sagara Sensei, for being such a great teacher for Ethan!

My Boy
My boy turned 13 this past Thursday.
I now officially have a teenager. How did this happen?
It seems like only yesterday that he was a little fuzzy headed cutie, like the pictures below.
My mom sent me these pictures with Ethan's birthday package. I'd never realized it until now, but I guess he's always had an interest in the guitar. It makes me so happy to know that music is an important part of his life (and that he has a great musical taste)!
I used to carry this boy in my arms, let him sleep in our bed when he had nightmares, and play cowboys and indians with him.
And now, he's taller than me, can literally lift me up, and has turned out to be an all-around courteous and kind person. What a blessed person I am to have such a wonderful son.
I can't stop him from growing up, and even though I want him to stay my "little boy", I can't wait to see what kind of man he turns out to be.

Movin' Up

It's fun, seeing him grow and figure stuff out. He definitely has his own mind, and is very independent. He's creative and smart - I know everybody says this about their kid, but it's true!
Each 6th grader gave a speech, talking about their best memories, or thanking their favorite teacher. Ms. Deelstra had Ethan give the closing speech.
Untitled from Sarah Robinson on Vimeo.
(There's another video of Ms. Deelstra talking about Ethan, but I can only upload 1 video a week on Vimeo, so I'll put it up on my facebook it you'd like to see it)

306 days to go...
Day 52: A sweet card given to me by a student. I was helping her practice for the English interview for a High School she wanted to go to. She passed!
Day 53: A cute figurine I bought from an artist at a handmade goods market.
Day 54: Ethan turned 12.
Day 55: Sakura blossoms at Sagara sensei's.
Day 56: Ethan playing at his school's variety show with his guitar teacher. So proud...
Day 57: Nathan on our tiny, crappy couch. However, I'm excited to say that we're buying a new couch this weekend!!!
Day 59: Only in Japan would construction barriers look like cute monkeys!

This week is the last week I'll teach my third graders before they graduate and move on to high school. Which stinks, because third grade was definitely my favorite grade - they were more comfortable talking with me, and they always asked me to eat lunch with them. But second grade's finally warming up to me (they're the more "challenging" group of the school), and I've gained a few fans who don't mind talking their limited English with me. It's sad to think that March will be my last month at Hokuyo - it seems that just when I get comfortable with a school, and the teachers and students get comfortable with me, then I have to move on. C'est la vie, I suppose.
Ethan's variety show was great, and I was so proud of him performing in front of everyone. Among the myriad of piano solos and duets, he was the only one that played guitar, and he's pretty good for a kid who just started playing about four months ago. Who knows, maybe I'll pick up Ethan's acoustic and teach myself to play again!

This boy...
...Yep, this one, with the lazer gun.
...the one who once thought the Empire State Building was called the Vampire State Building, and then drew a picture of it on the train......who always made sure his action figures were in just the right place...
...who's always been a talented artist, even a tad political (above is a picture of Pres. Bush he drew when he was in first grade)....
....this boy turned 12 on Wednesday.....
It's no secret that Nathan and I were young when Ethan was born. I was in college, and was determined to stay in school and be a mom. It's been hard work, but I never, ever regretted having Ethan in my life. When he was small, he was always entertaining us and singing songs and dancing. And now he's so smart and thoughtful. Looking at Ethan makes me feel like I've done something good in my 30 years. I just didn't expect the time to go by so fast.

334 days to go....
Day 24: Really beautiful art deco mosaics in the entrance of the school. I was trying to be artsy with the flash, and it didn't turn out the way I wanted. Doesn't really do the mosaics justice.
Day 25: First grade students during lunchtime. The one in the middle with the glasses is obsessed with me. Whenever she sees me, she screams out my name and scares me half to death. These girls ask me to eat lunch with them quite often and I enjoy talking with them.
Day 26: Calligraphy done by third grade students. In Japan, it's tradition to write a New Year's calligraphy on the 2nd day of the year, so it was the student's assignment over the winter holiday to write this. I teacher told me what it said, but I forgot.
Day 27: The tiniest paper crane ever, given to me by Go, a third grader (his nickname is potato, for reasons I don't know). I told him I want him to teach me origami, and he told me he only knew how to make cranes. The next day, he showed me some new origami he'd made - dogs, bears, various other animals. I'm pretty sure he's teaching himself every night just so that he can teach me!
Day 28: Firemen in front of our apartment building looking up at something.

Day 29: Ok, so it was 11:30 at night, I'd just come home from a friend's place, and remembered I hadn't taken a picture for the day. At least you get to see my cute Rilakuma phone case! And yes, that's our bathroom.
Day 30: A little puppet I made. You pull the string and the arms come out.
The Robinson clan is settling in to the long winter here in Sapporo, and man, is it cold! As you can see in the above picture, I deck myself in gloves, a hat, scarf, and other necessities so the long walk to the subway isn't quite so frigid. In fact, we're all pretty well-equipped for the winter here, although I'm still on the lookout for snow pants for Ethan.
Speaking of Ethan, it seems like he is really flourishing here, as I've never seen him so content with school before. I give credit to Hokkaido International School - it's a great education and I think Ethan is really getting the help he needs there, since math has always been his weakest subject. I just received his report card for the first half of the year, and although the math grades are not exactly where I'd like them, his confidence in the subject is improving, so I know the grades will follow. The class size is small for his grade, and I think that's helped him to feel like he's not lost in the crowd, since he can be a bit on the quiet side (like him mom). I'm proud of him - he's playing guitar, going to aikido classes, writing, drawing, and learning Japanese. I'm just going to put it out there and say that Ethan's the coolest kid I know!!
(can I take credit for some of that?)

They grow up so fast...
When we moved to New Jersey, Ethan was just a little tyke starting 1st grade. Now we live in Japan and he's in 6th grade!! In true parent style, Nate and I have taken pictures of Ethan's first day of school every year. Let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we?

Second Grade
Third Grade

His body gets taller and his hair gets longer! How does time go by so quickly? I don't feel any older, really. I guess time really does fly!
